Diabetes

Footwear Tips.

A common complication in people with diabetes is foot ulcers. Diabetic foot syndrome is a complex disease in which polyneuropathy, infection, peripheral vascular disease (PVD), and foot deformity are some of the leading factors for diabetic foot ulceration. Risk factors for re-ulceration include: elevated body mass index (BMI), severe neuropathy, limited joint mobility (LJM), previous amputation, previous ulcers, metatarsal head bone prominences, claw and hammer toes, hallux valgus and rigidus, structural and functional equines, and Charcot foot and altered gait.

The aforementioned factors will not result in foot ulceration apart from an external trauma or pressure. External trauma is classed as repetitive pressure causing continuous stress, such as walking, pressure from poorly fitted footwear or a short duration of a period of high pressure, such as standing on an object, which results in tissue damage. Approximately 80% of ulcers involve some trauma, and many ulcers are related to ill-fitting footwear.

High Arched Feet/Pes Cavus

Footwear Tips.

Some people have what is called “oversupination” or “hypersupination,” which can predispose them to injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis, ankle sprains, and stress fractures. You can tell you’re a supinator if you have high arches, your running shoes wear out on the forefoot and outer sole, and if your wet footprints show a thin connection between heel and forefoot on the outside edge of the foot. Having the right shoes can help prevent a world of hurt from developing over time.

Ideal features of footwear for high arched/cavus foot should be:

  • A lot of cushioning and shock absorption
  • A lightweight, flexible midsole
  • Arch support
  • Removable foot beds

Brand Profile

PW Minor

The year was 1867.  Two brothers, Peter Wycoff Minor and his brother, Abrahm, were making the long trek back from the Civil War to their home in Interlaken, New York.  As they walked, they began to envision a new company.  A company that hand-crafted quality shoes and boots for men and women.  Footwear that helped people stay on their feet, that kept people comfortable as well as productive.    150 years and four generations later, the Minor family remains true to this commitment.  Still crafting shoes in their factory in Batavia, New York.  Still engineering and building comfort and precision fit into every pair.  At p.w. minor, we are shoemakers.  We understand that you want comfort, fit, and style in your footwear.  And we are committed to your health and wellness.  We live this commitment every day, and we take the time to do things right.  That’s our heritage.  That’s our promise to you and everyone who wears our shoes.
